Dr. Yoder’s training is in theoretical/computational solid state physics, where he worked on
applying density functional theory (an approximation method in quantum mechanics of a
many body system) to different types of materials, especially conjugated semi‐conducting
polymers, the predict their electronic properties.
Now, however, Dr Yoder spends most of his research activity on Physics Education Research.
He is co‐Principal Investigator on an National Science Foundation Grant that changed our
introductory physics courses to a new active‐learning approach with the laboratory activities
integrated with lecture and problem‐solving activities. He has currently submitted a paper
for review to The Physics Teacher about some of the innovative activities that have been
developed in this grant.
Also, Dr. Yoder is working on novel approaches to teach Quantum Physics to upper‐level
undergraduates. In 2006, The American Journal of Physics (AJP) published a paper based on
some of the novel techniques he is using in his quantum class. He hopes one day to author a
textbook in this subject.
