Bio

Dr. Pitts received his Ph.D. from the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he had access to some of the best ground-based observing sites in the world.  His research background is in the identification of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs (i.e., so-called "failed" stars).  While in Hawaii, he also obtained certification in teaching inquiry-based lab activities from the Institute of Scientist and Engineer Educators.  As a senior lecturer at EKU, his focus is on teaching and community outreach.  He regularly gives star talks under the dark skies of Kentucky's national parks and uses EKU's Hummel Planetarium in both local community events and on-campus astronomy courses.
